QUESTION: Do I really need to take drum lessons?  Isn't it easy enough to just learn on my own?

ANSWER: You can learn on your own, but if you're really serious about it (and you want to make sure you don't develop bad habits or hurt yourself...PHYSICALLY hurt yourself), you should really take personal one-on-one drum lessons with someone who knows what they're doing.

What is perhaps the biggest bad habit that you can develop (if you don't take drum lessons) is tension and stiffness.  Unless you learn how to properly hold the drumsticks and play with effortless fluidity, you can easily develop knots in your muscles (very painful!), tension in numerous parts of your body including your neck, and other conditions that are highly discomforting (and very unhealthy!).

Save yourself from a lot of pain and frustration and get a drum teacher who can give you their undivided full attention at least once a week with drum lessons.  It will be well worth your time and money.  =-)
